Goals of the conference

One of the foundations of sustainable development, as well as nature and environment protection, should be better knowledge of geodiversity, which is one of the basis of the functioning and stability of ecosystems and protection of geologic, pedologic and geomorphological values.

Karst covers a significant part of Croatian territory which is characterized by a unique geodiversity, and diversity of phenomena which is more or less accessible to man, and many geoheritage sites. Although part of the geoheritage of Croatian karst is already protected through various protection levels, its value is often not recognized to the full extent and it is still not adequately presented to the public.

The goal of this conference is to highlight the values and importance of geodiversity and geoheritage of Karst, which has, in recent decades, an increasing importance as a source of information about the history of the Earth. The role of geodiversity and geoheritage in functioning of ecosystems and their services is being recognized, moreover, they are gaining significance in educational context.

Locations where the geoheritage is properly recorded, evaluated, protected and interpreted will be presented through best practice examples, as well as the sites where more effort is still necessary. Special emphasis will be placed on speleological objects that are insufficiently explored, unilaterally evaluated and often vulnerable sites in karst.

General topics of the conference

  • How to properly explore, make an inventory, evaluate and use data about geodiversity and geoheritage in nature and environment protection?

  • How to raise awareness of public, nature and environment protection sector and tourism industry for the values, proper presentation and conservation of geoheritage.

  • What are the possibilities of improving the progress in information on geodiversity and geoheritage and how to combine them with education and tourism attractions?

  • What is the importance of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network and how much is it recognized in Croatia, especially in karst areas?

  • To what extent the existing system of nature and environment protection in Croatia fulfills the role of the leader of scientific research activities and the expansion of educational contents in the field of geoheritage?

  • What scientific and expert research is needed to be implemented in order to prepare the sites for visitors as well as for monitoring towards geodiversity and geoheritage conservation?

  • What problems are present in the research process, protection and management of geoheritage?

  • What is the specificity of speleological objects as harder available sites in the context of geoheritage and the role of their continuous research and monitoring?

Geodiversity, Geoheritage and Geoturism in Karst Areas. Cave park Grabovača, Feb 18 -19, 2017
