The History of Speleological section Velebit

 

1954

The SOV is founded by: Boris Mikulic Mikas, Nikola Simunovic, Nedjeljko Jakic
Then it was a part of the Mountaineering section. The cave Balinka (-50 m) was explored.


1956

1959 The first speleo-diving in Croatia

Hrvoje Malinar - Joe, had dived with a fire-equipment breathing apparatus, an ordinary torch and in ordinary swimming suit in the 5 m deep siphon.


1960

Twenty cavers have come to SOV form the Javor Club.


1961 Explored 23 caves

The most important caves were Rokina bezdana (-101 m deep), Puhaljka (-110 m deep) Vrtlina na Velebitu (900 m long), Javornica (300 m long).


1962 Explored , with archaeological value (Iliric culture)

Mamet (206 m deep), Donja Cerovacka spilja (385 m long). H. Malinar and Z. Hercigonja have visited the Moira Cave (Ontario, Canada).


1969 SRT used.

Chairman: Marijan Cepelak, Secretary: Mladen Garasic

Marta Sekely and Hrvoje Malinar have used SRT, descended 250 m in Puhaljka and found a new channel (just the two of them). That gave a new swing in caving, from the expedition type exploring to just few people descending into a cave.


1970

Miljacka na Krki, cave long 470 m and Titina jama (329 m deep) were explored.


1972

The deepest caves were Jama u razloškom docu (-100 m) and Jama u Zelinu (-102 m).


1973

1600 new meters in Jopiceva cave, 36 members. Puhaljka was explored till 280 m in depth, diving in Tounjèica siphon (33 m deep).


1974 Gordana Keba has slided at a scree and died at the Spelological School.

SOV has 50 members, Jama u Rašporu (335 m deep). In Jopiceva Cave explored 1850 m of channels.


1975 Expedition Puhaljka (318 m deep)

Also explored Rokina bezdana (123 m deep), and Sincica spilja (387 m long).


1976 Ponor Bunjevac (445 m deep)

Chairman: Damir Prelovec, Secretary: Dalibor Kasac

Explored Ponor Bunjevac till 445 m deep, but the bottom not reached. Marijan and Radovan Cepelak, Boris Vrbek and Mladen Garasic have visited the Holoch cave in Switzerland.


1977 In Jopiceva cave researched 6223 m, Explored Ponor Bunjevac till 534 m deep

Several cavers with Mladen Garasic as a leader founded Caving Section Sutjeska and left Velebit. In the mountaineering expedition at Mt. McKinley (Alaska) died Milan Matovina.


1979

Descending in Puhaljka, mining at the bottom, but just 2 new meters in depth (-320m).


1980

1982 expedition Gouffre Berger

Chairman: Robert Erhardt, Secretary: Koraljka Ivanovic

Robert Erhardt, as a member in the expedition Gouffre Berger descended 1100 m deep, what was then a depth record for the Croatian cavers in that time. The pit Mamet was visited. The hut at the Samarske stijene was repaired.


1983 System Panjkov Ponor - Krslje (9325 m)

Six members went to the speleo expedition in Morocco


1984 Djula- Medvednica cave (13 km in a year!)

Four members went to the expedition in Austria (Jesenja jama, 680 m deep)


1985 Djula- Medvednica cave (the length of 15 km was reached)

1986

In Djula-Medvednica cave 556 new meters is explored. Six members went to the expedition Picos de Europa organised by the Speleological Commission, there were explored 32 caves, the deepest named y10 (-341 m).


1987

Chairman: Teo Baresic, Secretary: Damir Lackovic

Explored cave Punar u Luci (267 m deep, 1278 m long). Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj (explored till 6100 m)


1988.

Chairman: Teo Baresic, Secretary: Zeljka Trubic

Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj (new 1000 m), where Robert Erhardt and Teo Baresic have dived a siphon. At the expedition in China 7 cavers have found 10 caves, the longest are Gan Yan (2736 m) and Hua Shi Dong (2334 m). All together 46 caves were fond in Croatia and Montenegro. Three cavers were participants at the speleological school in Germany.


1989

Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj (new 646 m). In Montenegro, 6 caves were found. Some members took a part in the speleo camp of the Zeljeznicar club, they have explored Munižaba (-448 m deep). The First Velebitian competition in underground orientation


1990.

Chairman: Slaven Dobrovic, Secretary: Jagoda Munic

Eight cavers visited Batman Hohle (Schwersystem) in Austria deep 1219 m. Five of them reached the bottom; Ana Sutlovic was the first Croatian lady that reached this depth. At the Speleo camp was explored Fantomska jama ( 477 m deep) as well as 33 other caves. Teo Baricic and Zoran Stipetic dived through 21 m long siphon in the cave Punar u Luci (the siphon was at the depth of 267 m). In the cave Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj Teo Baresic and Zoran Stipetic have dived through 3 siphons so the new length of the cave is 8035 m. The longest siphon was dived in Golubinka in Ljubucki zaljev (70 m). (Divers were R. Erhardt, S. Dobrovic, Z. Stipetic, H. Malinar and R. Kakarigi). Four members took a part in scuba diving expedition in the Black sea (former USSR). SOV has organised seminar about rescue in caves and speleo diving.


1991 The war broke out, Speleo camp at Velebit

Five caves were explored at Speleo camp at Velebit. New chanals in Veternica (new 70 m, reached by hard digging) and Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj (now 8143 m). Three members went on the trekking to Peru and Bolivia. Teo Baresic and Zoran Stipetic have done remarkable work on the archive of cave drawings (prepared them for the computer analysis). It was organised a school of orientation and bivacquing in the winter conditions.


1992

The area of the activities, as same as the number decreased because of war. In spite of that, 10 cavers went to the expedition Picos de Europa, where they have explored the system Pozo Chizidi deep 403 m and 951 m long. In Veternica was explored 80 m, and in Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj 154 m. Twenty new caves were explored on Velebit, although that was a dangerous area. The majority of cavers from the club took an active role in Croatian forces, while others join the Mountain Rescue Team as helpers. The Second Velebitian competition in underground orientation.


1993 Speleo camp Lukina jama (organised by the Speleological Committee)

Fourteen members of the SOV took a part at the Speleo camp Lukina jama (then 1355 m deep), while 6 of them have descended to the bottom. Teo Baresic have explored 109 m deep cave by himself. In Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj was explored 200 m of channel.


1994 Expedition Lukina jama (organised by the Speleological Commission), 39 new caves

Chairman: Zoran Stipetic, Secretary: Ana Predovic

Teo Barešiæ and Zoran Stipetiæ have dived a siphon on the bottom of Lukina jama (long 57 m). Eleven members of SOV have descended to the bottom, four of them girls. In the Strict Nature Reserve Hajducku kukovi several caves were explored, the deepest of them is G6 (212 m).


1995 Expedition Lukina jama (organised by the Speleological Committee), Speleo mountaineering expedition in Bolivia, Peru and Chile.

Eighteen members took a part at the expedition Lukina jama. All together it was explored 663 m in depth and 764 in length. Three caves were explored in Bolivia on the Speleo mountaineering expedition in Bolivia, Peru and Chile, where were 17 members. Damir Lackovic held lectures at the International Karst School In Postojna (Slovenija) about sediments in the Spilja u kamenolomu Tounj Cave and exploring of Lukina jama.


1996

Chairwoman: Ana Sutlovic, Secretary: Tanja Bizjak

The 1996 will be remembered after Zoran Stipetic - Patak, one of the best Croatian Speleo divers, caver and friend, who died accidentally on 16th of March. SOV held even two speleo camps this year. The fist was at the Velebit mountain with 12 members. There were explored 11 new pits. The most important were Slovacka jama ( -1000 m deep) and that was explored together with Slovak cavers. The pit Obadov ugriz (sov7, 125 m deep) was also interesting.

In August was a speleo camp at the Biokovo mountain. Twenty six cavers have explored 27 caves in only 2 weeks. The most interesting was Culjak jama (155m deep), Jama br. 105 (115 m), Jama malog puha (-105 m) and jama Boreal (85 m). All together, 1478 meters in depth and 1279 meters in length was explored and drawings were done. Remarkable was the cooperation with the caver form the Spelological Section Biokovo.

Two members have taken a part in speleo camp organised by the Speleological Section Japetic at the Velebit.

In autumn, The Third Velebitian competition in underground orientation was held. Competitors were from Croatia and Slovenia. At the International Karst School Damir Lackovic had a lecture about cave exploring in Bolivia, while 6 people have visited the International Speleological Meeting (Fiume Veneto, Italy).

A documentary film "Velebit in Andes" was finished and shown at the Croatian television (HTV).


1997

Chairman: Sinisa Resetar, Secretary: Mislav Vedris

The most important event in the year is Speleocamp "Lubenovac", North Velebit, where 30 club members surveyed 23 potholes (pits) with total depth of 1400 m. Pothole Patkov gust (-553 m) is the most important among them and it is the second World pitch (vertical).

Explorations of Cerovacke caves ( 172 m new meters surveyed), sinkhole Punar u Luci including sump diving (60 m in depth and 86 m in length are surveyed), and at Zumberak (together with club Japetic - from Samobor) were continued.


1998

Chairman: Sinisa Resetar, Secretary: Mislav Vedris

The most important event in the year is expedition "Slovacka jama 98", North Velebit, where 30 club members in cooperation with 15 Slovak cavers explored Slovacka jama up to the depth of -1268 m that is now 2nd deep in the world. In the area, 10 new potholes are surveyed beside Slovacka jama, deepest of is Suncana jama (186 m). All recenty surveyed caves are marked with metal tags and position of entrances is defined by GPS.

Two workshops are orgainsed in cooperation with the Commission for speleology of the Croatian mountaineering Association, one about rigging and derigging and the other about use of computers in speleology.
